TitleRussell, Sir Edward John: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionDate stamp on reverse
CitationDirector of the Rothamsted Experimental Station. Distinguished as an Agricultural Chemist, especially on account of his searching study of the influence of sterilisation on the fertility of soils; his results have been proved already to be of great economic value, particularly in connexion with the cultivation of the crops raised under glass. Dr Russel has done much to extend the scope of the experimental enquiries at Rothamsted and to attract workers to the Laboratory; owing to his efforts also, funds have been raised to rebuild and extend the laboratories and the new buildings will soon be fit for occupation. Author of numerous contributions to agricultural science, published by the Royal Society, the Chemical Society, the Journal of Agricultural Science and elsewhere, either alone or in conjunction with Mr A D Hall or other workers; also of several text books relating to the science of agriculture.
