DescriptionDate stamp on reverse
CitationLate Fellow, St John's College, Cambridge. Temporary Major RE, DSO. On the staff of the Meteorological Office; lately Superintendent of the Statistical Division. Distinguished as a meteorologist and physicist. Third wrangler, 1903. His first paper was a dissertation on 'The Velocity of Negative Ions in Flames' (Proc Roy Soc, 1907), submitted in the competition for Fellowship at St John's College in 1906. Known very widely for two contributions to the study of the upper air; the first 'On the Isothermal Layer of the Atmosphere and Atmospheric Radiation' (Proc Roy Soc,1909), propounded a physical explanation of the separation of the atmosphere into stratosphere and troposphere, now an established theory. The second , 'On the Inter-tional Kite and Ballon Ascents.' Geophysical Memoir No 5 obtained the first prize of the 'Deutsche Meteorologische Gesellschaft,' offered in 1908. It is the standard work of reference on this subject and develops many original lines of thought, some of which are given in 'Der Tagliche Gang der Temperatur in 1 and 2 'Km' Hohe in der freien Atmosphare' (Sitzber K Akad Wien, 1909). Another contribution is on 'Barometric Gradient and wind Force' (MO 190, 1908), which by developing the results of theory confirmed the practical conception of pressure and wind as quantitatively related phenomena and has had far-reaching results. Also may be mentioned a note on the connexion between periodic variations of wind velocity and atmospheric pressure (MO 203, 1910) and professional papers in the quarterly Journal, Royal Meteorological Society.
