| Citation | Has made an extensive study of Methyl and other Derivatives of Sugars and Allied Compounds, and has developed their use in solving Constitutional Problems. The Configuration of Mannitol has thus determined. Has effected the first Conversion of Glucosamine into Glucose, and into Mannose, and has synthesized Aminoglucosides. Has devised and practised successfully a new process for the manufacture of Glycol Chlorhydrin, a substance now urgently needed. Author or joint-author of a series of papers (some 50 in number), mostly published in the Transactions of the Chemical Society (1899-1915), of which the following are examples: - 'The Constitution of Glucose Derivatives'; 'The Conversion of Glucosamine into d-Glucose'; 'The Influence of Configuration on the Condensation Reactions of Polyhydroxy Compounds'; 'Derivatives of a New Form of Glucose'; 'The Mechanism of Muta-rotation.' Author of the Annual Reports of the Chemical Society on the Progress of Chemistry (Organic Chemistry). Part I - Aliphatic Division 1914; and Section I, 1915. Has recently improved the methods of preparing pure Dulcitol, and has thereby succeeded in supplying this substance in quantity for the use of bacteriologists. Distinguished as an organic chemist; has specialized in the Sugars and Allied Substances, in which group, in collaboration with his Assistants and Students, he has developed a School of Research at St Andrews. |
