CitationResearch Chemist, under the Medical Research Committee (National Health Insurance). Distinguished as a chemist who has greatly promoted the advance of chemistry as applied to the problems presented by plants and animals. The following are some of his chief contributions to science: - 'A Microscopic Method of determining Molecular Weight' (Journ Chem Soc, 1904); 'Isolation and Synthesis of 'p'-hydroxyphenylethylamine, an Active Principle of Ergot Soluble in Water' (ibid, 1909); 'Synthesis of Hordenine, the Alkoid from Barley' (ibid, 1909); 'The Constitution of Carpaine' (Journ Chem Soc, 1910); 'The Alkaloids of Ergot' (with F H Carr) (ibid, 1907). The following papers were published conjointly with H H Dale: - 'Die Mutterkornalkaloide' (Arch d Pharm 1907); 'Ergotoxine and other Constituents of Ergot' (Biochem Journ 1907); '4-beta-Aminoethylglyoxaline and the other Active Principles of Ergot' (Journ Chem Soc 1910); 'Chemical Structure and Sympathomimetic Action of Amines' (Journ Physiol 1910); 'beta-Iminazolylethlamine, a Depressor Constituent of Intestinal Mucosa' (Journ Physiol 1911). The following papers were published with H J Ewins: - 'Application of the Microscopic Method of Molecular Weight Determination to Solvents of High Boiling Point' (Journ Chem Soc 1905); 'The Synthesis of Thionaphthen Derivatives from Styrenes and Thionyl Chloride' (ibid, 1908); 'The Constitution of Ergothioneine, a Betaine related to Histidine' (ibid, 1911); 'The Identity of Trimethyl Histidine from Various Sources' (Biochem Journ 1913); 'The Synthesis of Substances Allied to Epinephrine' (with H A D Jowett) (ibid, 19050; 'Pressor Substances from Putrid Meat' (with G S Walpole) (Journ Physiol 1909); 'Preparation of the Betaine of Tryptophan and its Identity with the Alkaloid Hypaphorine' (ibid, 1911).
