Distinguished for his knowledge of Physiology and for his contributions to Science, among which are the following papers: - 'Das Verhalten von Glukosamin und Chitose im Tierkorper' (Zeit f Physiol Chem 1903); 'On the Presence of an Antibody to Trypsin in Normal Serum' (Journ Physiol, 1904); 'The Toxin of the 'Bacillus enteriditis' of Gaertner' (Journ Hug, 1906); 'On the Relation between the Output of Uric Acid and the Rate of Heat Production in the Body' (with J Leathes) (Proc Roy Soc, 1907); 'Ueber die Zusammensetzung des Hungerharns' (Bio-Chem Zeit, 1907); a series of papers (8) on 'The Influence of Carbohydrates and Fats in Protein Metabolism,' commencing (Journ Physiol, 1909); 'The Pre-Pyloric Sphincter' (Journ Physiol); a series of papers on 'The Influence of Carbon Dioxide on the Vascular System' (with Dr E H Clarke) (ibid, 1914). Author of the following books: - 'The Physiology of Protein Metabolism' (Longmans, 1912); 'Muscular Work. A Metabolic Study, with Special Reference to the Efficieny of the Human Body as a Machine' (with Dr F S Benedict), Carnegie Institution Monograph, Washington, 1913.
