| Citation | Professor of Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering, Technical College, Finsbury. Known chiefly for his work in connection with wireless telegraphy. Has published many papers dealing with this subject, the chief amongst which are: - 'Effect of Electrical Oscillations on Iron' (Phil Mag, 1906); 'Efficiency of Short-Spark Methods' - joint paper - (Journ Inst Elect, vol xliv); 'On Coherers' (Phil Mag, 1910); 'Oscillation Detectors Actuated Solely by Resistance, Temperature and Variations' (ibid, 1910); 'Note on Electrical Waves Occurring in Nature' (Proc Roy Soc, 1911); 'Diurnal Variations of Natural Electrical Waves, &c' (ibid, 1912), in which he suggested and developed the theory of the influence of an ionised layer of the upper atmosphere in guilding electrical waves-natural and artifical-round the earth; 'Electrothermal Phenomena at a Contact' (Proc Phys Soc, 1913). Author of volume on Wireless Telegraphy. Hon Secretary to the British Association Committee on Radiotelegraphic Investigations; Hon Secretary to the Physical Society of London since 1914. Deviser of several electrical instruments - for example, the thermophone, for the detection of acoustic frequency currents by ear and applier of the microbalance to the measurement of minute and oscillatory currents. Since the outbreak of war has done much confidential work for the Admiralty, Board of Inventions and Research, for the Signals Experimental Establishment, Woolwich, and for the Air Board. |
