CitationProfessor of Physical Chemistry in the Imperial College of Science and Technology. Secretary of the Chemical Society. Distinguished as a teacher of chemistry, especially in the department of physical chemistry. He rendered important services as Secretary of the Sectional War Committee of the Royal Society, and in research work undertaken for the War Office. Author of the following, among other papers, in the Transactions of the Chemical Society and elsewhere: - 'Freezing -Point Curves for some Binary Mixtures of Organic Substances' (Journ Chem Soc, 1903); 'Researches on the Freezing-Points of Binary Mixtures of Organic Substances' (with S H Smith) (ibid, 1905); 'The Dielectric Constants of Phenols and their Ethers' (with D Haynes) (ibid, 1905); 'Influence of Various Sodium Salts on the Solubilities of Sparingly Soluable Acids.' - Part I (ibid, 1905), Part II (ibid, 1909); 'Influence of Non-Electrolytes and Electrolytes on the Solubility of Gases in Water' (ibid, 1907); 'Refraction and Dispersion of Triazo-Compounds.' - Part I (ibid, 1908), Part II (ibid, 1912); 'Behaviour of Two Salts with a Common Ion, when Dissolved in an Organic Solvent' (with H R Courtman) (ibid, 1910); 'The Solubility of Sulphanilic Acid and its Hydrates' (with A Bramley) (ibid, 1913); 'The Reaction between Ferric Salts and Thiocyanates' (ibid, 1913); 'The Influence of Sucrose and Alkali Chlorides on the Solvent Power of Water' (ibid, 1915). Author of 'Physical Chemistry; its Bearing on Biology and Medicine,' 1910, 2nd ed 1913, reprinted 1915; and two other books.
