| Citation | Distinguished for his work on the logical foundations of mathematics and physics and particularly of geometry. His earliest work made valuable contributions to the 'Theory of the Zeeman Effect' (Ann der Physik, 15, 1904, and Gottingen Inaugural Dissertation). Other papers include 'Conduction of Electricity through Gases' (Phil Mag, 1905); 'The Tension of Overhead Wires' (Proc Camb Phil Soc, vol 15); 'Rational Factors of a Quantic' (Messenger of Mathematics, 1908); 'Construction of Magnetic Shells' (Nature, 1920), and others which cover a wide range. His most important work however to which he has been devoted for some years is contained in his books , 'Optical Geometry of Motion, a new view of Relativity' (Camb, 1911); 'A Theory of Time and Space' (Camb, 1913); 'The Absolute Relations of Time and Space' ('in the press'). These are very fundamental contributions completely worked out with great skill and analytical or geometrical power, to the foundations of geometry and physics, and are already in many respects classical. His work on Peano's axioms in 1912 is of the same character. |
