CitationDistinguished for researches in pure and applied organic chemistry, especially in relation to the investigation of substances of physiological or therapeutic interest. Inventor of processes for the utilisation of relatively valueless alkaloids, an example of which is the ingenious conversion of narcotine into hydrastinine. Author of 52 original papers, 24 of which describe work carried out without collaborators, and is also the originator of inventions incorporated in nine English Patents. Among his more important achievements may be mentioned the determination of the structure of pilocarpine, the constitution of pavine and the synthesis of histidine.
