CitationAuthor of numerous original contributions to our knowledge of the Geology of the British Isles. Distinguished for his researches on the coal measures and the geological phenomena of the last glacial epoch. When Professor at Leeds he founded a successful School of Geology. Among his more important papers are 'The Concealed Portion of the Coalfields of Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire'; 'Cleat in Coal Seams'; 'Split Coal Seams'; 'Physiography of the Coal Swamps'; 'Carboniferous, Permian and Quaternary of Great Britain'; 'Glacier Lakes in the Cleveland Hills'; 'Glaciation of East Lothian' (with E B Bailey); 'Glacial Geology of the Isle of Man.'
