CitationDistinguished for his researches on tidal theory and its applications, and in other branches of mathematical physics. Author of various papers on the dynamical theory of the tides, which have been published by the London Mathematical Society, the Royal Society and elsewhere. Awarded in 1923 the Adams Prize of the University of Cambridge for an extensive essay on the Tides, containing much original matter not yet fully published. Has taken a leading part in the establishment and conduct of the Tidal Institution of Liverpool, of which he is Honorary Director. This Institution is the first of its kind, has done valuable work in revising and improving methods of tidal analysis and prediction, and is in intimate relations with the Admiralty and various Colonial Governments.
