Author or joint author of some 35 memoirs, published chiefly in the Journal of the Chemical Society, on Organic Synthesis and on the Constitution of some Terpenes and Carbohydrates. He has determined the structure of many of the di- and tri-saccharides, including sucrose, maltose, lactose, melibiose, cellobiose, gentiobiose, raffinose, and gentiacrose, and has synthesised amygdalin.
