TitleHarington, Sir Charles Robert: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionDate stamp on reverse. Citation typed
CitationDistinguished for the application of organic chemistry to biology. Gained the Harrison Memorial Prize for the best research by a British Chemist under thirty. Increased yield of thyroxine from the gland twenty-five fold and could thus determine its constitution; synthesised thyroxine (now manufactured in several countries). Made peptides of thyroxine, resolved thyroxine and obtained the more potent enantiomorph by enzymic digestion of the gland; similarly isolated its probable precursor di-iodo-tyrosine. Found a novel standardized method for crystallising insulin. Synthesised thiolhistidine (probably present in zein) to facilitate search for this amino acid. Discovered attraction of Teredo larvae by constituent of wood.
