CitationDistinguished for his researches in Organic Chemistry. Author of over 85 memoirs dealing with a wide range of subjects, published chiefly in the Journal of the Chemical Society and the Biochemical Journal. In particular, mention may be made of his work on the unsaponifiable matter of vegetable and animal liver oils, including the elucidation of the structure of squalene, the chemistry of the sterols, and the spectrographic analysis of pro-vitamin D and vitamin A. Reference may also be made to his work on styrylpyrylium salts, 'spiro'-pyrans, the chemistry of unsaturated ketones, and the synthesis of alkyl naphthalenes.
