CitationIs the principal British authority on the Freshwater Algae, having contributed a long series of original papers on every branch of the subject. His more important papers include those on the peculiar characters of tropical freshwater algae floras, on terrestrial algae and their physiological relationships, on the causes of periodicity in the appearance of freshwater algae, and on encrusting algae; also a general account of freshwater algae ecology; besides the standard treatise on British Freshwater Algae and numerous taxonomic papers. At East London College he has built up a considerable and active school of research in this subject including many research students from outside.
