CitationDistinguished for researches in Spectroscopy, in which he has published many papers. Independently dicovered the Band Spectrum of Helium and has made extensive investigations of its structure (series of papers in Proc Roy Soc (1913) and (1922-1929)), giving quantum analysis of electronic bands and elucidating nature of difference between atomic and molecular energy levels. Atomic Hydrogen, including first accurate determination of Rydberg Constant (Proc Roy Soc, 1914, 1919). Analysis of Fulcher Bands and of new series in molecular Hydrogen (Proc Roy Soc and Phil Mag, 1925-1926). Absorption spectrum, etc, of Iodine Chloride (Trans Far Soc, 1929-1930). Has also inspired and directed valuable researches carried out by students working in his laboratory.
