TitleYoung, Alfred: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionDate stamp on reverse
CitationDistinguished for his researches on Algebra. During the last thirty-three years has published a connected series of extensive memoirs, chiefly in the Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society, on Quantitative Substitutional Analysis, a calculus based on permutational operators, of which he is the chief living discoverer and exponent. His methods have proved most powerful in solving problems in the invariant alegebra of forms in any number of variables, and in the representation of abstract finite groups as matrix groups. Recently his results have been applied by Weyl in his work on Group Theory and Quantum Mechanics.
