TitleBriggs, George Edward: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationDistinguished for his acute critical formulation of fundamental aspects of the physiology of plants. Has applied mathematical analysis, and exposition of the kinetic and energetic principles that govern protoplasmic phenomena to a wide range of physiological problems. Communications of this type have been published by the Royal Society: - On the photosynthetic activity of chloroplasts as affected by (1) the first development of chlorophyll, (2) the lack of nutrient salts for protoplasm, (3) the energetic efficiency of various spectral wave-lengths; also upon problems of growth-rate, the respiratory index, and, recently, a study of ionic equilibria and salt-uptake by the plant-cell.
