TitleCannon, Herbert Graham: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationDistinguished for his researches on the embryology, structure and bionomics of Crustacea. He was the first to show that the distinction between primary and secondary body-cavities established for Peripatus by Adam Sedgwick held as rigidly for Crustacea. He has also elucidated the way in which currents of water are produced by the outer branches of the limbs (expodites) which subserve respiration and also in the lower Crustacea the wafting of food to the mouth. He has made a comparative study of the structure of the little known excretory organs of the lower Crustacea. Most important papers: 1924 - On the development of an Estherid Crustacean (Phil Trans Series B, Vol 212); 1925 - On the segmental excretory organs of certain freshwater Ostracods (Phil Trans Series B, Vol 212); 1927 - On the feeding mechanism of Nebalia bipes (Trans, RS (Edin), Vol 56); 1931 - On the anatomy of a marine Ostracod Cypridena (Discovery Reports No 2).
