TitleStoner, Edmund Clifton: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionDate stamp on reverse
CitationDistinguished for his original work in atomic structure and its bearings, especially in the domains of magnetism and astrophysics. Particularly should be mentioned (1) his work about 1924 on electron distribution in atomic levels, in the course of which was explicitly enunciated a rule, soon after generalised in the Pauli exclusion principle; (2) his application for the first time of the Fermi-Dirac statistics to the problem of the equilibrium of dense stars; (3) his interpretations of magnetic phenomena in terms of atomic structure. A list is appended of over thirty papers and books since 1922, including his standard work on 'Magnetism and Atomic Structure' and his new book 'Magnetism and Matter' (1934).
