CitationDistinguished for his researches in mycology and plant pathology. Has made valuable contributions to our knowledge of the physiology of parasitism, of specialisation of parasitism, and of the nutrition of fungi generally. He has also made a special study of the genera 'Fusarium' and 'Helminthosporium'. Since 1915 he has developed an active school of plant pathology and has exercised a potent influence on research in this field. Nearly 50 papers have been published from his laboratory (chiefly in the Annals of Botany) many by himself, some in collaboration with students, and others by students working under his guidance.
