CitationDistinguished as a physical chemist and as an authority on the chemistry and physics of glass. Formerly lecturer on physical chemistry in Sheffield University. Organised the Department of Glass Technology in that University and founded the Society of Glass Technology during the War period, thereby rendering invaluable aid to the industry. Author or part author of nearly 200 papers, one-half of which deal with molecular association, with physico-chemical properties of solutions and with the relation between the chemical constitution of glass and (a) its physical properties, (b) corrosion, and the remainder with problems of glass manufacture.
