TitleGriffith, Alan Arnold: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationDr Griffith has contributed largely to the science and development of aircraftand aero-engines, both as an abstract physicist and as an eminently practical engineer. His researches cover a very wide field, ranging from novel methods for solving complex stress and fatigue problems to the practical development of supercharges, gas turbines, etc. Practically the whole of his work has been carried out under the aegis of the Air Ministry; hence it has, of necessity, received less publicity than its deserves. Publications: 'The Phenomena of rupture and flow in solids' (Phil Trans 1920), 'The use of soap films in solving stress problems' (Proc International Congress for applied mechanics).
