TitleWhite, Philip Bruce: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionDate stamp on reverse. Citation typed
CitationDistinguished for his studies on the antigenic architecture of 'Salmonella' bacteria and cholera vibrios. He initiated the systematic study of the antigenic constituents of members of the 'Salmonella' group with a view to scientific classification, the scheme was taken further by Kauffman and is now generally adopted. He has shown that vibrios can also be analysed in a similar manner, and a study of the polysaccharide complexes of smooth, rough and 'p' forms is giving us an insight into the structure of the bacterial cell. He has also studied the Isle of Wight bee disease.
