TitleFage, Arthur: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationPrincipal Scientific Officer in the Aerodynamics Department, National Physical Laboratory. Distinguished for his contributions to the experimental study of aero- and hydrodynamics. Of his 95 published papers 80 are reports of the Aeronautical Research Committee, 11 were published by the Royal Society. Perhaps his most important discovery was the method of observing turbulent flow with an ultramicroscope. Starting in collaboration with Townend, Fage was responsible for all subsequent development. He made the first measurements of distribution of the components of turbulent velocities in a pipe, and his researches on transition from steady to turbulent flow in boundary layers have thrown much light on this important and difficult subject.
