TitleTodd, Alexander Robertus, Baron Todd of Trumpington: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationProfessor of Organic Chemistry. Distinguished as an organic chemist and biochemist. Early work in the cholic acid series was followed by the synthesis (with Robertson) of the chief diglucosidic anthocyanins and later (with Taistrick and Robinson) the constitutions of some metabolic products of species of Helminthosporium were determined, partly by synthesis. He has developed remarkable new syntheses of vitamin B1 and established the structure of thiochrome. Equally significant has been his contribution to the chemistry of vitamin E and the vitamin B1complex especially the liver filtrate factor. He has established the constitution of constituents of hashish and has synthesized reference compounds.
