TitleSynge, John Lighton: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationFormerly Fellow of Trinity College, Dublin. Professor of Applied Mathematics in the University of Toronto. Author of 59 mathematical papers. His memoirs on the geometry of dynamics display a remarkable combination of dynamical knowledge, mastery of tensor calculus, and geometrical intuition. Has made considerable contributions to Riemannian and more general geometries, and to the theory of relativity, especially in placing the energy tensor on a statistical basis and in the generalization of Newton's third law. His work on dental mechanics is unique, and in hydrodynamics he has contributed to the study of stability by consideration of vorticity, and has systematically developed the hydrodynamics of a perfect fluid in general relativity.
