CitationProfessor of Mathematics in the University of London. Distinguished for the exceptional range of his mathematical knowledge and interests, and for his varied original contributions to wave mechanics, relativity, mechanics and pure mathematics. In wave mechanics he has especially developed the use of general symbolic operators (Proc Roy Soc A, 127, 339; 138, 479). In mechanics he has written important papers (and in collaboration a book) on Rayleigh's principle: he has also provided a theoretical justification of Southwell's method of systematic relaxation (Proc Roy Soc A 169, 476).
