TitleBurch, Cecil Reginald: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationDistinguished for his original contributions to applied physics. With Davis he worked out the quantitative theory of induction heating applied to high frequency furnaces and designed large industrial furnaces.
He discovered a method of preparing stable oils and greases of exceedingly low vapour pressure. These materials with the appropriate pumps and joints also developed by him laid the foundation of large scale high vacuum engineering and now find extensive application throughout the world. More recently he has devised methods for the preparation and testing of aspherical surfaces. His contributions in this field include a reflecting microscope of novel design and a practical procedure for improving the off-axis definition of lens systems.
