Among his major contributions to knowledge are (1) the development of the principle of the primary and secondary stimulus (2) the effect of formalin on diphtheria toxin and the use of formol toxoid as the basis of diptheria antigens (3) the discovery of alum precipitated toxoid (4) the theory and practice of the Schick test (5) the rate of disappearance of antibodies from the blood (6) the avidity of antibodies (7) the identification of different toxins produced by certain bacterial species, and their antibodies. A list of 67 papers is appended.
