DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished as a synthetical organic chemist. Jointly with the later Professor W H Perkin, jun he synthesised dicentrine, beta homochelidonine, cryptopine and protopine and with J M Gulland a number of aporphine alkaloids were synthesised, using novel modifications of Pschorr's method. With G R Clemo he put the finishing touches to the chemistry of santonin, especially by the synthesis of r - desmotroposantonin. He made noteworthy contributions to our knowledge of the phenanthrene group and by synthesis forged a link in the chain of evidence for the constitution of oestrone. He is most widely known for his brilliant sythetic work in the group of the phenolic resins.
