TitleStanier, Sir William Arthur: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationSir William Stanier is chief mechanical Engineer of the L M S Railway and one of the three Scientific Advisers appointed by the Ministry of Production. He is distinguished for his technical and scientific work on locomotives, to which he has contributed much in the way of improved design, for his research into such problems as steam distribution in the cylinder of a locomotive, and for the development of new apparatus for testing locomotives. As President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers he has done much to advance the application of science to mechanical engineering generally.
