CitationDistinguished for his investigations in quantitative pharmacology, particularly in relation to the development and application of pharmacological methods for the identification and estimation of acetyl choline, adrenaline and histamine in animal tissues; to the application of mathematical methods to the design of biological assays and the computation of their errors; and to the general development of the theory of cholinergic and adrenergic nerves. He has written a comprehensive monograph on vasodilator substances and has an international reputation as an authority on that subject: established the importance of the method of parallel quantitative assays in the qualitative and quantitative identification of substances by pharmacological methods, and has made many significant contributions to laboratory technique.
