CitationDistinguished for researches in nuclear physics and radio-location. Carried out investigations with Lord Rutherford on the fine structure of alpha-particle groups from many radio-active elements using new types of proportional counters. Examined the disintegration of the light elements by fast protons and deuterons and made important contributions to the construction of the Cavendish Laboratory cyclotron and to the development of the electrical techniques of detection and measurement of single atomic particles and quanta. As Superintendent of TRE, has, since 1939, played a leading part in the development of radiolocation and its application to many problems of national importance.
