TitleBrown, Sir George Lindor: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationEarly work was devoted to the study of the motor innervation of the stomach. This led to an investigation of transmission through sympathetic ganglia, and this in turn, to a study of transmission from nerve to skeletal muscle. Modern electrical methods were applied to the analysis of the responses of excitable tissues to chemical agents, and so helped to give a sound basis to the conception of chemical transmission. This was followed by a study of the comparative physiology of nerve muscle. The knowledge of normal function so obtained was applied to the elucidation of the underlying fault in disease of the neuro-muscular system. Brown's war research has been of great scientific interest and practical importance.
