DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished by his theoretical investigations in the border line regions of mathematics, physics and chemistry. In particular, he has studied the torsional rigidity of single and double bonds and contributed extensively to knowledge of the architecture and force fields of the polyenes and aromatic hydrocarbons. Another series of investigations was concerned with the paramagnetic properties of hydrated crystals of rare earth and iron group elements. These led to valuable new results on the energy spectra of paramagnetic ions. Since 1939 he has successfully carried out important researches for the Admiralty and Ministry of Home Security.
