CitationDistinguished for his researches on virus diseases of plants and particularly on the relationship of the virus with the insect vector. He has made important contributions to our knowledge of the behaviour of the virus in the insect's body and has perfected a technique for studying the relationship between insect and virus. He was the first to demonstrate in insects the genetical control of ability to transmit a virus. In 1941 he undertook the work of the Scientific Secretary to the East African Supplies Boards, and after serving in various capacities, became in 1944 Chairman of the East African Industrial Research Board.
