TitleCowling, Thomas George: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his critical and constructive contributions to difficult problems of mathematical astronomy, gas-theory, ionospheric physics and geomagnetism. His principal astronomical papers deal with the stability of stellar models, the point source model of a star, convective equilibrium in stellar interiors, and the internal density- distributions of stars as deduced from the motion of the apsidal line in close binaries. He is joint author with S. Chapman of The Mathematical Theory of Non-Uniform Gases (underlined). In this field his most important work has been on the difficult problem of the electrical conductivity of an ionised gas in a transverse magnetic field.
