DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for valuable contributions to bacteriology and immunology.
He successfully applied exact serological technique to the study of viruses in his work on the antigenic structure of the elementary bodies of vaccinia.
He originated the method of typing typhoid bacilli by means of Vi bacteriophage, a procedure which has opened a new chapter in the control of enteric fevers. During the war of 1939 - 1945 he has devised a method for concentrating and purifying the rickettsiae of Typhus Fever from yolk-sac cultures.
This has been of extreme value to the British and U.S. Armies as most of the typhus vaccine used has been prepared by this method.
A list of thirty-seven papers is appended.
