CitationDistinguished for researches in aero-elasticity (flutter), elasticity of materials, & other problems of mathematical physics. With Dr. R. A. Frazer he laid the foundations of the new subject of the flutter of aeroplane wings, tail surfaces, or airscrew blades. He combines a high degree of mathematical ability with a thorough knowledge of engineering, & has been conspicuously successful in his application of analysis to practical engineering problems. He has contributed much to the subject of the stability of aircraft & is at present in charge of the flight research section of the Royal Aircraft Establishment.
