CitationDistinguished for his contributions to knowledge of high voltage phenomena, and for his work on high voltage and vacuum devices. His researches on long electric sparks have given important information about the mechanism of discharge. He has done valuable work on the breakdown of liquid insulators. His technological work (with collaborators) includes the development of high frequency vacuum induction furnaces (1925), a 3 million volt impulse generator (1933), and continuously evacuated high voltage X-ray tubes, which last have revolutionised X-ray technique in our hospitals. During 1944-5 he has been in America, collaborating in the atomic energy research there. A list of papers is attached.
