TitlePowell, Cecil Frank: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationDistinguished for contributions to experimental physics. He showed that the tracks produced in a photographic plate by high energy particles could provide qualitative data on the energetics of nuclear processes. In his hands the method has since proved a most powerful tool of wide applicability. He has already applied it either independently or in collaboration with others to measurements of neutron energies, elastic & inelastic nuclear scattering, cosmic rays & natural radioactivity. In earlier systematic work on positive ion emission ionic motion in pure gases he also gave evidence of marked experimental ingenuity. (Bibliography appended.)
