TitleSmith, Wilson: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished in bacteriology.
His early work on standardisation especially of autopneumococcis serum was of a high order, as was his work on viruses which culminated in the isolation of the influenza virus from man (with Laidlaw and Andrewes). Further work established the causal relationship of this virus with influenza. His influenza work made him well known throughout the world but his association with more senior colleagues perhaps to some extent unjustifiably detracted from the individual credit which he received. His recent work however on staphylococcus coagulase stamped him as one who could conceive and carry out important researches which have thrown much light on the pathology of staphylococcus infections. This was the more difficult as most observers has thought that the staphylococcal problems were worn threadbare.
A list of papers is appended.
