TitleSutton, Sir Oliver Graham: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationHas developed a statistical theory of turbulent diffusion and evaporation, based on an extension of the work of G I Taylor on Diffusion by continuous movement, the most important steps being published in two papers in the Proceedings 1932 and 1934. This work has made it possible to compute the rate of evaporation of a liquid of known physical constants, when the wind distribution is known, without recourse to empirical formulae. More recent work has added to our understanding of diffusion in the lower atmosphere and of convection. Sutton's work has been an inspiration to other workers in the field of meteorology
