TitleCoulson, Charles Alfred: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his valuable applications of wave-mechanical theory to chemical problems, particularly by the method of molecular orbitals. He has treated in this way the molecules H 2, CH4, complex hydrocarbons, etc. He has also made calculations of the atomic wave-functions for the atoms Li to Ne, and correlated the electron momentum distributions in atoms and molecules with observed Compton line profiles.
He has developed the theory of conjugated molecules by the method of molecular orbitals and has made calculations of their total energy, electron densities and bond orders. He has also made important contributions to the theory of their chemical reactivities.
