TitleJones, Sir Ewart Ray Herbert: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationHas carried out many investigations relating to natural products including important studies in the sterol group and in the polyterpene field. His researches in the former group have led recently to a new and vastly improved route to 7-dehydrocholesterol, the natural provitamin D. Arising out of synthetic work in connexion with vitamin A, he has studied extensively a wide variety of acetylenic compounds and has discovered a rearrangement of unsaturated alcohols of fundamental importance; he has determined the mechanism of this reaction by light absorption measurements. These studies have also led directly to an elegant synthesis of delta-hexenolactone, the differential growth inhibitor. Throughout the war he has been engaged in important work on behalf of the Ministries of Supply and Home Security. He has published over 50 original papers.
