CitationDistinguished for application of spectroscopic methods to biochemical problems, notably: recognition of provitamins D and photochemical characterisation of vitamin D; isolation and structure of vitamin K from fish; conversion of carotenoids to vitamin A in vivo. He discovered rich deposits of vitamin A in the intestinal mucosa of fish and showed that in fresh water fish vitamin A is replaced by vitamin A2. He has elucidated the connection between the retinenes of the visual purple and vitamins A and A2. He has published more than 100 papers in addition to monographs on vitamins and on spectroscopy.
