DescriptionCitation typed
CitationShortt has added greatly to knowledge of pathogenic protozoa and diseases caused by them, especially kala azar. He was the first to show that an organic antimonial compound, urea stibamine, was highly specific in cure of this disease, the first indication of the present day line of treatment. After for many years adding greatly to knowledge of the organism and its aetiology he has recently successfully demonstrated its transmission by the sandfly. He has also carried out other important work on the nature of Negri bodies in rabies, the working out of the complete developmental cycle of piroplasma (Babesia canis) in the tick, observations in the parasites of monkey malaria and Plasmodium gallinaceum and descriptions of new species of protozoan parasites of animals. He was a member and later Director of the Kala azar Commission 1926-33, Director of the King Institute of Preventative Medicine, Guindy, 1934-8 and on retirement has recently been appointed to the Chair of Medical Protozoology in the University of London.
