TitlePfeil, Leonard Bessemer: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationLargely responsible for working out the conditions for the production of large iron crystals; determining the tensile properties of single crystals of the metal and the influence of varying crystal sizes in multi-crystalline specimens. In later work he studied the deformation characteristics of iron crystals, and the effect of occluded hydrogen upon the strength of iron and intercrystalline brittleness. His researches on the fundamental aspects of the scaling of steel have been extensively used by others. He has built up a large research staff which, under his direction, has made many improvements in the mechanical properties of alloys especially as regards additions of precipitation hardening elements.
