TitlePrescott, James Arthur: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationDistinguished for his investigations on the soils of semi-arid regions. In Egypt he studied the effects of climatic conditions on the microbiological changes in the soil. In Australia he made the first map of the main soil types, studying the more important in detail, especially their relations to climate and vegetation, and the remarkable deficiencies shown by some of them. As Director of the Waite Institute he has to deal with agricultural research problems in many parts of Australia; in this he has achieved outstanding success, raising the Institute to a high position among the research organisations of the Empire.
